Peter Piper

A black and white cartoon illustration of a young man in a plaid shirt and ripped jeans, wearing an apron labeled 'PETER PIPER PICKLES & PEPPERS,' standing in a kitchen. He is looking at his phone and smiling, with a speech bubble saying, 'AI SAYS: YOU PICKED 147 PEPPERS. THEY'RE IN THE FRIDGE, LOWER DRAWER.' The kitchen has a refrigerator filled with jars and bottles, a sign on the fridge saying 'EAT MORE PEPPERS!,' a small potted plant, and multiple baskets and barrels labeled 'PICKLED PEPPERS' filled with peppers. On the wall, there are signs reading 'I PICK 'EM YOU PICK 'EM PETER PIPER PICKED 'EM!' and 'GOOD PEPPERS MAKE LIFE BETTER.'

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. At least he thought it was a peck.

Peter had spent the morning fishing peppers out of enormous barrels and putting them into baskets. Somewhere between barrel number three and lunch, he stopped counting.

So Peter asked AI. “How many pickled peppers did I pick?”

AI reviewed his inventory.

147 peppers.

Peter stared at the screen. “Where did I put them?”

Refrigerator. Lower drawer.

Peter opened the refrigerator.

There they were.

One hundred forty-seven pickled peppers.

Peter stood looking at them for a moment.

Then he asked AI the question that had bothered generations before him.

“What exactly is a peck?”
